Choir House

Having taken 15 months to complete and many more months, even years, to plan, the official opening ceremony of the newly refurbished and extended Choir House took place on Sunday 27 April.

Members of the Cathedral community, chorister parents and other invited guests were welcomed by the Dean before the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, marked the official opening by blessing the building. The ceremony finished with two songs sung by choir.

The Choir House building, which can accommodate 30 boys, dates back to the 16th century. It was converted to a boarding house in 1938 and last modernised in the late 1960s. Not only has the house now been modernised to comply with the latest boarding requirements and ever-changing Health and Safety legislation, but new parts have been added. These include a purpose-built wing for the house parents, two self-contained apartments for the matron and tutor and new soundproofed music practice rooms for the choristers, who are required to play two instruments in addition to singing.

Part of the refurbishment was funded by a generous donation to the Appeal from the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation.
